  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Cold butter Rubbed in, optional
  • 1 cup Milk Or water for traditional recipe
Optional Ingredients
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar Optional for gentler flavor
  • 1 splash Extra milk For brushing on top

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt.
  3. Rub in the butter with your fingertips until it resembles rough sand.
  4. Pour in most of the milk, stir gently, and add more only if necessary to form a soft dough.
  5. Shape the dough into a round and place on a lined tray.
  6. Cut a deep cross on top.
Baking
  1. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Notes

Keep dough soft, avoid kneading too much, make a deep cross, use a hot oven, and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
