For the Tarte
  • 6-8 pieces apples (such as Granny Smith or Golden Delicious) Select firm apples that can hold their shape when cooked.
  • 1 cup sugar Used for caramelizing the apples.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter For making the caramel. Can substitute with a plant-based alternative.
  • 1 sheet puff pastry Use regular or gluten-free pastry as needed.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract Enhances the flavor of the caramel.
  • 1 pinch salt

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel, core, and quarter the apples evenly.
Caramel and Assembly
  1. In an oven-safe skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat and then add the sugar. Stir until a golden caramel forms (about 5-10 minutes).
  2. Carefully add the quartered apples to the skillet and add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Cook for another 10 minutes until the apples soften.
  3. Roll out the puff pastry and place it over the apples in the skillet, tucking the edges in.
Baking
  1. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is golden brown.
  2. Let the tart cool for a few minutes, then carefully invert it onto a plate.
