Method

Cake Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until thoroughly combined.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, and stir in the vanilla.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter-sugar mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with the dry mix.
  6. Stir in the boiling water until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Frosting Preparation
  1. Combine milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter, and vanilla in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened, about 10 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in coconut and pecans. Let cool to room temperature before frosting the cake layers.
