Method
Preparation
- Mix your warm milk, warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it looks foamy.
- Add flour and salt, then mix until it becomes a shaggy dough.
- Add melted butter and keep mixing until it starts to come together.
- Knead for a few minutes until it feels smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, add a tiny bit more flour.
- Pop the dough back in the bowl, cover it, and let it rise until doubled, about 45 to 75 minutes.
Assembling
- Roll the dough into a rectangle. Spread a thin layer of Vegemite over it.
- Sprinkle cheese all over, right to the edges.
- Roll it up tightly like a log, then slice into scrolls (9 to 12 pieces).
- Place them in a baking dish so they’re barely touching. Cover and let them puff up for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Baking
- Bake until the scrolls are golden and the cheese is bubbling, typically about 20 minutes.
- Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Brush the tops lightly with melted butter for a shiny finish if desired.
Notes
These scrolls should be enjoyed while warm. If you want extra flavor, consider adding garlic powder or dried oregano beside the Vegemite, but keep it subtle. They travel well, making them perfect for lunchboxes or snacks.
